Zhejiang Wuzhen – Water Town in South China

Wuzhen is the No.1 summer resort agreed by Chinese people, there are charming scenery everywhere. Many famous people make a film or MV in Wuzhen. When you go to Wuzhen, you will find bridges, rivers, old towns… Every where is so wonderful and peace.

Wuzhen lies in the far north-east of Zhejiang province, about 90 minutes by road from Shanghai. The name "water town" is especially apt; besides lying on the Grand Canal, the settlement is completely encircled by two rivers - the Dong Shi and a smaller tributary, which meet at a T-junction. No matter where you stand, water provides the backdrop, the bridges connect the whole town.

Zhejiang WuzhenWuZhen is one of the old town among Jiannan, there is more than 6000 years old for this old town. Wuzhen wass called as Wudun and Qingdun. Wuzhen is an special “water town”, it is appraised as the land of fish and rice, and the home of silk. Now, Wuzhen is a AAAAA scenic spots in China.

With the economic developed, Wuzhen still keeps its style of water town. Local people still live in old houses. The whole town is connected by rivers and bridges, houses were built by the rivers.

Wuzhen is still a living town, where daily life goes on life goes on as it has for the last thousand or so years. Coppersmiths, wood-carver and silk-spinners work at their age-old crafts. Bicycle rickshaw drivers exchange stories as they wait for passengers. People cart water, cook meals, and tend their gardens, each flower-plot the size of a postage stamp.
The townsfolk of Wuzhen gather in the town square around mid-day - talking, smoking or playing mah-jongg. They seem laidback and contented. Most of all, they seem to enjoy observing the passing parade, which provides a constant source of amusement. Western visitors are still a rarity here.

About 250 families used to live in the old quarter of Wuzhen. However, following the "restoration" of the town, many townsfolk have been moved out to the "new" Wuzhen, an attractively landscaped but otherwise characterless apartment block 15 km down the road towards Shanghai. Those who remain are mainly the elderly and craftspeople.

The old wooden shops of Wuzhen look ageless and immovable, as though their timbers have totally defied the ravages of time. At first, one suspects that the custodians of the town have tried to cover up the decomposing processes of nature. But look more closely and you find slow rot setting in around the bases of the doorframes, and splinters breaking away from the lintels. What little restoration has been done is so inconspicuous as to be totally indistinguishable from the original.

All the buildings in Wuzhen are in Ming or Qing Dynasty style. One palatial establishment is the "Double Happiness" Marriage Shrine. Twin hearts are joined in a nouveau-Chinese character in gilt upon a flaming crimson background, presumably depicting the inseparability of marriage - perhaps the Chinese know something that we Westerners don't.

Wuzhen also has some unique attractions, including Yu Liuliang's Coin and Paper Money Exhibition.

No fewer than eight stone bridges cross theDong Shi River, the grandest of them being the Fengyuan Double Bridge. The bridge is separated into two parts by a wooden sluice gate. Cyclists carry their bikes across the high arches of the bridges, which are designed to let boats pass underneath without difficulty.

Back in the main square, the elders are still hanging out. On the village stage, a performance of Peking Opera is underway. Across the square, a master puppeteer entertains visitors with a shadow-play of the type known in Java as wayang kulit. But while the Javanese version of shadow puppetry is subtle and refined, the Wuzhen style has the protagonists attacking each other with the ferocity of tigers.

Whether by accident or design, this town seems to have been dropped into its watery setting by a master town planner from another galaxy. A more perfect location for a settlement would be difficult to find.

Gold Coast

There is a 52.1 km coastline about 17 km from Beidaihe coast, which is Gold Coast. Gold Coast is featured by gold sand, soft beach, clear water and even tides. It is an ideal place in Qinhuangdao to take sea-bathing, sun-bathing, sand-bathing, forest-bathing and air-bathing. The most attractive sports in Gold Cost is sand sliding. First you can take the ropeway cable car to directly reach the top of the sand mountain, on the way you can enjoy the unique scenery of rows of sand hills stretching distantly.

Gold CoastSitting on the bamboo or wood made sand sliding board, you will slide like a shot from the top of the sand hills tens of meters high. With the increase of the speed, you will continue to slid tens of meters forward due to the effect of inertia, making you feel quite novel and stimulating but safe and sound at the same time. There are two types of sand sliding, one is to slide from the sand hill to the bottom of the valley, and the other type is to slide into the sea.

Besides the sand sliding in Namibia in South Africa, it is the second largest sand sliding in the world now.

Tips:
You can take middle buses at Baidaihe Haibin bus station, or take No.5, No.22 bus at Baidaihe railway station to the 281 hospital stop and change to middle buses.

Xitang Historic Town of China

Xitang is a two densely distributed with rivers and has a very quiet natural environment. There are 9 rivers converge in this town, dividing it into 8 sections, and many bridges link this water town together (anciently called as “nine dragon old pearl” and “wind from sides”).

Xitang Historic Town of ChinaInside the town, there are many well-preserved architectural groups constructed during the Ming and Qing Dynasties, which boast a higher artistry and study value, these being highlighted by the experts at home and abroad studying antique building. Through a bird’s eye view of the whole town, green waves ripple everywhere and every family resides near water.

In the morning, water flows beneath bridges, thin mist likes silk, pinkish wall on both banks stand tall and erect and tiled house are reflected inversely in the water. In the evening, the setting sun shines slantwise songs come from fishing boats. Lamps flicker and the fragrance of wine drifts. The whole old town likes a poem and a picture. In this town, people will feel that they are seemingly in an earthly paradise. It is hard to know that people exist in the picture or picture exists in the heart of people.

The Lake of a Thousand Islands

A phenomenon of recent creation, the Lake of a Thousand Islands is so unassuming that it remains unmarked on the great map of China - or most guide books for that matter. Hidden away in the Eastern reaches of Zhejiang province, the Lake of a Thousand Islands is overshadowed by the neighbouring city of Hangzhou, one of China's premiere tourist attractions. While one of China's oldest tourist blurbs - 'in heaven there is paradise, on earth Suzhou and Hangzhou' - may have been an accurate reflection of these cities a century ago, years of heavy tourism have slowly changed the face of their beauty. These destinations remain a must-see for those wanting to visit famous Chinese water scenes, but for those seeking something closer to the word 'paradise' as it is understood as a Western concept, the Lake of a Thousand Islands offers a much more apt alternative.
An idyllic picture of blue water and green isles, the Lake of a Thousand Islands is a respite for travellers weary of overly iconic scenic attractions; a refuge for those wanting to escape overcrowded and polluted city centres; a retreat for those needing to recuperate from their 'china experience'; and a recreational resort for those wishing to revive the body and revitalise the soul. For those new to country, the lake is an interesting example of the emergence of leisure tourism in China. With a population of a mere 45,000, the small township that borders the lake feels more like one big lakeside resort than a town. A large selection of first-class accommodation affords more discerning visitors the opportunity to stay on a private lake and enjoy an undisturbed spot of sun and stretch of water. For the more adventurous, the lake sports the largest recreational water centre in eastern China, and is the perfect place to indulge the inner-child and try out a whole raft of water-sports for much less than it would cost in most Western countries. The Lake of a Thousand Islands vicinity encompasses many qualities comparable with internationally renowned resort destinations, but the undeniable advantage it has over such overseas rivals is that it is conveniently located within the Chinese borders.

The Lake of a Thousand IslandsLocated in Chun'an County, the Lake of a Thousand Islands lies 140 kilometres southwest of Hangzhou, along the old shipping route of the Qiang-Fuchen-Xian'an Rivers. The lake is in fact a reservoir formed by the completed construction of the Xin'an River Hydroelectric Power Station in 1959. The transformation of a mountainous valley into a picturesque scene of pristine water and secluded islands was an inadvertent by-product of economic development and engineering achievement. The region has subsequently become China's largest state forest park, spanning almost 1,000 square kilometres. Today, the Lake of a Thousand Islands can be considered a natural scenic beauty in its own right - a modern ecological haven of native flora and fauna.

Recognised by the tourism industry as a 'bright pearl on the golden tourist line' connecting the famous Yellow Mountain of southern Anhui province and the West Lake of northern Zhejiang province, the Lake of a Thousand Islands more than holds its own against its famous neighbours. From an elevated vantage point, the view of the lake and surrounding region feels like a surreal scene stolen from an ancient Chinese scroll painting - dark isles rising from the mists of the waters blend into a backdrop of mountain ranges that fade into a distant skyline. Under a clear sky, however, no watercolour can do justice to the emerald green and gold of the islands mirrored in a luminous expanse of clear blue water. From above, the islands look like lazy turtles drifting in a pool of heavenly water; from below, touring on the waters of the lake is like holidaying inside a beautiful picture.

The name 'Lake of a Thousand Islands' evokes imagery of a thousand scenes, and this is a fair representation of the ever-changing waters of the lake. The spirit of the lake changes with the seasons, reflecting the mood of the heavens above. At dawn the lake sleeps under a light blanket of mist; at noon sparkles of diamonds and gold shimmer through iridescent waters; and at dusk brilliant rays of gold and red spill across a lake of fire as the sun retreats beyond the dark shadows of the mountain peaks. In autumn, the hills are dyed with yellows and burnt orange, the rich gold clay of the shorelines melting into a depth of dark blue. In winter, jagged ice sculptures overhang the lake and the islands form a chain of white across the water. In spring, a scene of blossom is unveiled to reveal a picture of red, pink and white splashed against a backdrop of aqua waterways. In summer, the pristine waters are cool and inviting beneath the puffs of white cloud and blue sky.

The pure waters of the lake flow directly from the Alpine peaks of the northern Yellow Mountain range. This fact, coupled with the reservoirs relative youth and the region's sparse population have protected the lake thus far from the fates of more famous Chinese lakes such as the West Lake in Hangzhou and Lake Taihu of Jiangsu province. Today, the reservoir is considered one of China's cleanest water supplies and boasts the country's largest scale water production facility, with Nongfu Spring water drawn and distilled from the waters of the lake. The 17.8 million cubic meters of freshwater are breeding ground to an abundance of fish and aquatic life. Not surprisingly, the fresh fish on the local menu is among the best on offer in China. The environment bordering the lake is also lush with vegetation and wildlife, and the rate of green ground coverage is six times the state average. The Lake of a Thousand Islands area nurtures more than 1,700 types of plant life and the atmosphere is pure and clean - a literal breath of fresh air. The breeze that drifts lazily across the waters of the lake carries the fragrance of osmanthus and wisteria. The perfumed wind is a sensual reminder of the beautiful expanse of native flora that grows unrestrained across the region.

The Lake of a Thousand Islands cannot be dismissed as simply an area of scenic splendor. The serene landscape above the water's surface belies the historical wonders hidden within its blue depths. Submerged beneath the water rests a unique archaeological treasure. The 1,800 year-old remains of an ancient Chinese city can be found in the mysterious underwater world of the lake - an Atlantis of the east. The story of a city abandoned to a watery grave forms the heritage of the region and survives in the folk culture of the relocated residents. The city walls and architecture have remained preserved under the water for the last fifty years, and prevail as some of the most substantial sunken artifacts in the world.

The impressive beauty of China's mountains and lakes have been idealized and romanticized by scholars and artists for centuries. It is almost impossible to appreciate such scenery without feeling the presence of a legacy that spans millennia. In a country as ancient as China it is rare to find a place that feels fresh and undiscovered by millions of feet before you. The paradise of water and islands that is the Lake of a Thousand Islands is such a rarity. A retreat that remains hidden from the masses, the sanctuary of the lake is almost too good to be true.

Hangzhou West Lake

West Lake (in Chinese is 西湖), which is a famous fresh water lake located in central Hnagzhou City, Zhejiang Province of eastern China.

The lake is divided by three causeways called Su Di (苏堤), Bai Di (白堤), and Yanggong Di (杨公堤).

Actually, the name “West Lake (Xi Hu)” is also used by a large number of lakes in Chinaand surrounding countries (with 800 West Lakes in China according to Lonely Planet). However, the lake in Hangzhou is the most famous of these, and the terms “West Lake” and “Xi Hu” generally refers to this lake.

He realized that the farmland nearby depended on the water of West Lake, but due to negligence of former governors, the old dyke had collapsed, the water level of West Lake dried out, and the local farmers suffered severe drought. He ordered the construction of a stronger and taller dyke, with a dam to control the flow of water, and the thus solved the drought problem. The livelihood of local people of Hangzhou improved over the following years. Now that Bai Juji and more leisure time to enjoy the beauty of West Lake, he visited West Lake almost every day. He ordered the construction of a causeway connecting the Broken Bridge with the Solitary Hill, to facilitate walking on foot, instead of depending on boat. Then he planted peach trees and willows trees along the dyke, making it a beautiful landmark of West Lake. This causeway was later named Bai Di Causeway in Bai Juyi’s honors.

After two hundred years later, in the beginning of Song Dynasty’s Yuanyou era (1086-1094), another great poet, Su Shi (Su Dongpo), came to Hangzhou as governor, By that time, the farmers suffered drought again, due to overgrouwth of the weeds at the bottom of the lake clogging the irrigation ducts. He ordered dredging of the lake and piled up all the mud into another causeway, in the style of Bai Causeway, but much wider and nearly three times as long, he also planted willow trees along its banks. This causeway was later named after him as the Su Causeway. There are six bridges along the 2.6 km Su Causeway. “Spring Down on the Su Causeway” is one of the attractions at the West Lake.
